WHAT: NCT's version of the Tony Awards, the Capital Awards are designed to recognize outstanding high school musical productions and performances.

WHY: The Capital Awards is a logical next step in NCT’s efforts to advance the performing arts by highlighting the work of the next generation of aspiring young performers. The goal of this award program is threefold: CELEBRATE the work of aspiring young performers in the community, ELEVATE the importance of performing arts education in community high schools, and PERPETUATE the Triangle’s support and passion for the performing arts.

WHEN: The Capital Awards ceremony will be held on Monday, May 19, 2008 at 7:00.

WHERE: Raleigh Memorial Auditorium at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts at 1 E. South Street, Raleigh, NC 27601

HOW: Arts educators at each school will nominate their school productions, outstanding actors and technical students for consideration. Schools that wish to participate in the 2008 Capital Awards must fill out the application form and have it returned no later than November 30th, 2007.
Groups of three judges from the Triangle area, selected based on their professional experience in the performing arts, will view the nominated productions and grade them according to the award criteria. Judging will begin in the fall and continue through the spring. Criteria and categories are listed below.

Awards include Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Choreography, Leading Actor, Leading Actress and many others. The school awarded Outstanding Musical will receive a grant to be used for their theatre department. As funding allows, individual award recipients in each category will receive a small college scholarship.

In May a full production with local and national celebrity presenters will be staged.

Outstanding Musical nominees will get a chance to perform one number from their show as part of the awards production. Each Outstanding Leading Actor/Actress nominated will also be allowed to perform a portion of a song from their performance. The evening will end with an All-School finale and every Wake County school is invited to have four student representatives participate, regardless of whether or not they have been nominated for a Capital Award.

WHAT AN AMAZING NIGHT! It was so thrilling for me personally to see all the young thespians gathered in the same place celebrating what we love to do! THEATRE!!! Hat's off to all the schools, directors, and numerous parents and volunteers for all the hours of hard work and dedication to these young performers. I am still running on the adrenaline rush from the night. Everywhere I turned I heard accolades and when I came to school today, we had several faculty and staff members who attended and were overwhelmed by the professionalism and superior quality of the whole event. I sincerely hope all of you were as thrilled as I was and are excited about future possibilities!
~Paul A. Orsett (Wakefield High School)

I cannot begin to thank you enough for allowing me to participate in the 2007 Capital Awards judging. I had an absolute riot and each school was very welcoming and the energy alone was worth the time. Congratulations on pulling all of this together and I hope you will consider inviting me to participate in the future.
~Joe O’Keefe (Judge)

“The whole experience was terrific for my students on stage, backstage, and in the house. Thank you so much for starting this wonderful tradition for the students of Wake County. We are excited about next year too.”
~Louise Whitmire (Leesville Road High School)
