2014 Master Summer Theatre Arts School
                                                            PRESENTS

                                                Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar will be directed/choreographed by Dance Department Head Tito Hernandez, a 20-year veteran actor/dancer/choreographer, and produced by NCTC Artistic Director Ray Walker. After a long Broadway career, which began when he appeared as “Marius” in Broadway’s Les Miserables, Walker moved to Raleigh and helped launch NCTC in 2004. Walker has appeared in various productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, including NC Theatre’s 2006 production as “Judas,” and in the 2000 Broadway production as “Annas.” Walker said, “It’s a project dear to my heart. Theatre is a bit like folklore. Having lived with Jesus Christ Superstar all my life, I’m incredibly excited to hand this piece of work down to a new generation.“

This production of Jesus Christ Superstar looks to take a more modernized approach, including projections and other non-traditional elements. Jesus Christ Superstar is based on the Gospels’ account of the last week of Jesus’ life, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The show weaves between political and interpersonal conflicts that are relatable to present time. In 2001, the show revived on Broadway and was nominated for a “Best Revival of a Musical” Tony Award. The show is popular for songs such as “Everything's Alright," "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," and "Superstar." Jesus Christ Superstar has been nominated for eight Tony Awards and is the winner of two Theatre World Awards.
