Our conservatory students have been hard at work preparing for their annual “Live on Stage” showcase, featuring performances by Live On Stage classes ages 5 to adult, as well as Junior, Senior, and Elite Live on Stage and Dance Companies. This years showcase will feature selections by composer and lyricist Jerry Herman. Herman is a Broadway legend and the composer for a number of productions, most notably the beloved classics Hello, Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage aux Folles. He has been nominated for the Tony Awards 5 times, and has taken home the honors more than once. Hello, Dolly! swept the Tony Awards it’s season, winning 10, a record that remained unbroken for 37 years, while La Cage aux Folles won the Tony Award for Best Musical (1983), and is the only musical to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice (2005 & 2010), therefore making it the only show to win a Best Musical award for every staged Broadway production.

Herman continued to create history as the first of only two composers/lyricists to have three musicals run more than 1500 consecutive performances on Broadway with Hello, Dolly! at 2,844, Mame at 1,508, and La Cage aux Folles at 1,761. In 2009, Herman was honored with the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre and in 2010, he was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. With such a rich history to celebrate, our students are sure to dazzle at the “Live on Stage” showcase, taking place December 10th at 7:00 PM in the Stewart Theatre at NC State University. This is one spectacle you won’t want to miss!
