A New Year Dawns at NC Theatre

December 07, 2016

As we turn our attention to all things green - holiday displays and year-end fundraising – we also look forward to the New Year, a clean slate and a fresh start. Our Timeless 2016/17 Season continues with Always…Patsy Cline running January 20-29 in the AJ Fletcher Opera Theater. What excites me about this show, apart from the talent and entertainment aspect, is the convergence of two compelling themes: the enduring track record of women to blaze trails and sustain friendships.

Virginia Patterson (Patsy) Hensley is an amazing role model: she dropped out of school to support her fatherless family and was a self-taught musician who controlled her career and defined her own look. She demanded her pay before taking the stage and her proclamation of “No dough, no show” became the rule. Her enduring friendship with Louise Seeger during her short life gave her the strength she needed to move her career forward. She signed off her letters to Louise with “Love ALWAYS...”

Once again, NCT has developed a number of community partnerships that complement the themes of this show, including Dress for Success Triangle. Their mission to empower under and unemployed women to achieve financial independence through a network of support, professional attire and development tools is the perfect fit, and I encourage you to learn more about this dynamic non-profit and the ways they are making a difference in our community.

As I depart from the stage and take a seat with you in the audience, I must reiterate my gratitude for your support and friendship in my years of trailblazing at NC Theatre. Please join me in affirming the important role of theatre to build community, harness creativity, and reaffirm the power of our collective human spirit. And let us commit to rebuilding bonds of trust, empathy and understanding in these glorious, renovated rooms at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.
